The ECM defines the cell microenvironment and is the biologic gate keeper of the cell (Fig. 3). It is this matrix which is ultimately responsible for organ function. Cancer results from the breakdown of the ECM permitting the cells to escape their confinement and divide in an uncontrolled but evolutionary preprogrammed fashion.

The explanation for the dramatic increase in cancer as noted in Figure 2 can be found in the TOFT. An increased postwar toxic load placed on the extracellular matrix has resulted in excessive levels of chronic inflammation leading to destabilization of the cellular microenvironment. Higher rates of matrix mesh fragmentation permits BRCA mutated cells to escape their confinement and divide uncontrollably with an increased incidence of breast cancer.

The traditional medical approach focusing on just cells has failed in addressing not only cancer but chronic conditions in general. Our paradigm of the extracellular matrix must be considered in preventing and treating all chronic conditions. These include but are not limited to: joint and muscle (osteoarthritis), skin ( eczema, psoriasis, acne, rosacea), autoimmune disease, and tumor formation malignant).

A stabilized matrix is the best form of prevention and research has shown that abnormal cells can be reimplanted into a healthy matrix resulting in a reversion back to normal.
