Our aging population is confronted by an epidemic of chronic conditions which result in extensive pain and suffering. Current estimates are that 1 in 4 Americans have a chronic condition with projected levels to reach 1in 2 within the next twenty years (Fig. 1).
Effective protocols for prevention and treatment have so far eluded traditional medicine. We at MDMatrix believe that this is in part due to the current disease paradigm which states that the cell determines the ultimate health of an individual; therefore, all prevention and treatment should be directed at the cell.
The shortcomings of the cell-only approach is best exemplified by the failed outcomes of our war on the chronic condition, cancer.
Traditional medicine’s current approach to cancer is an example of a flawed concept relying on the cell paradigm known as Somatic Mutation Theory (SMT). Editorials in prestigious Oncology journals as well as recent published studies have questioned SMT overall effectiveness. A new paradigm known as “Tissue Organization Field Theory” (TOFT) states that the functioning of an organ is not dependent on the individual cell (which is a rigid static structure programmed by the evolutionary need to survive to divide) but instead by the “extracellular matrix” or ECM.
Breast cancer provides an example of the shoert comings of the SMT . Figure 2 contains studies conducted by the lead researcher who discovered the breast cancer causing BRCA genetic mutations. Prior to 1940 the breast cancer risk was 1in 4 while after 1940 the risk increased to 2 in 3. The incidence of breast cancer was independent of the cell associated gene mutation contradicting the popularly held somatic mutation theory.
